Rifle hunts

For medium to larger plains game we recommend between a 7mm and .375 calibers, the latter being the minimum for dangerous game. If you are hunting large thick skinned game, you may want to consider a larger caliber. Rifles should ideally be mounted with quality variable scopes.

Familiar, well used rifles, quality soft/solid bullets and good placement shots are the most important factors for an African hunting safari. Discuss with your outfitter prior to buying ammunition for best suggestions and recommendations.

Always ensure you have a strong, protective, lockable rifle case to travel with internationally, with a separate lockable case for ammunition.

We suggest you practice shooting in the standing (with sticks/bipods in particular) as well as in the sitting and prone positions as most animals are taken this way in African hunting situations.

Black powder and handgun hunters are also welcome.

For hunters who wish to travel without firearms, we do have a selection of calibers that may be hired by prior arrangement.

South Africa requires a temporary import/export permit for firearms and ammunition when traveling to South Africa. We strongly recommend you apply for an advance rifle permit through our PHASA office or other clearing agents to assist with this process. For further detailed information with regard to traveling with rifles and other related firearm and ammunition legislation, please visit the PHASA website www.phasa.co.za.
